Today’s consumers expect brands to understand their needs and deliver relevant experiences at the moments that matter most. For B2C marketers, this means moving beyond simply reaching customers quickly. It means reaching them at the right time with the right message and experience.

Real-time data enables this by allowing information to be processed and made available for use within milliseconds after it is captured. For example, a retailer can detect when a customer abandons their online cart and automatically send a personalized reminder in real-time. However, real-time marketing is not always about acting instantly. Instead, it is about using insights to determine the best moment to engage with a customer – whether that is immediately, in twenty minutes, or weeks after an interaction.

This concept of “right-time” engagement helps marketers make each moment count for the customer by ensuring every interaction is timely, relevant, and connected to the customer’s journey. To achieve this, B2C marketers need solutions that can collect customer data, understand behaviors, and orchestrate personalized experiences across channels.

Adobe Journey Optimizer helps marketers deliver these experiences through two capabilities: Journeys and Campaign Orchestration. While Journeys enables real-time, event-driven customer experiences, Campaign Orchestration allows marketers to schedule and execute personalized batch communications.

Adobe Journey Optimizer

Adobe Journey Optimizer (AJO) is a solution built on AEP that gives marketers a single environment to design, orchestrate, and deliver personalized customer experiences across channels. AJO fuses behavioral, transactional, financial and operational data into a unified view of each customer, so every message, whether triggered instantly or planned weeks in advance, is grounded in the same customer context. AJO supports engagements across channels including email, in-app, app-push, SMS/MMS/RCS/web push, content cards, conversation-based messaging, direct mail, code-based experiences and landing pages. It also centralizes the tools marketers need to execute at scale: a drag-and-drop visual designer, reusable templates and content fragments, AI-powered decisioning, and built-in governance for consent management, communication frequency, and fatigue rules. Within this shared foundation, AJO offers two specific capabilities: Journeys and Campaign Orchestration, each designed for a different kind of engagement.

Adobe Journey Optimizer: Journeys

Journeys in Adobe Journey Optimizer enables personalized, multistep customer journeys that respond to real-time behaviours and changing customer needs. Its intuitive drag-and-drop canvas lets you orchestrate messages and actions across channels, using contextual data and audience insights to deliver relevant experiences.

AJO Journeys provides meaningful, real-time brand experiences that boost customer loyalty and lifetime value through key capabilities:

  • Real-time, 1:1 orchestration: Each profile progresses through the journey independently, with its state and context preserved at every stage.
  • Four journey types for different scenarios:
  • Unitary journeys respond to a real-time individual event (e.g., cart abandonment, welcome emails)
  • Read Audience journeys deliver scheduled batch communications to a segment (e.g., newsletters)
  • Audience Qualification journeys trigger in real-time when a profile’s audience membership changes (e.g., VIP upgrades, re-engagement)
  • Business event journeys respond to conditions affecting multiple customers at once (e.g., inventory alerts, flash sales)
  • Visual journey designer: A drag-and-drop canvas for defining entry points (events, audience, or audience qualification), configuring channel messages, adding branching logic and conditions, and building out orchestration activities like wait times, jumps, and profile updates with zero code required.
  • Contextual data & personalization: Draws on contextual data from events, AEP, and third-party API services to personalize each step and power conditional branching.
  • Built-in testing & optimization: Validate journeys with test mode, dry run, or simulation before publishing, then monitor entry, completion, and error rates and apply AI-powered send-time optimization to improve performance over time.

Business outcome: Engaging your customer at the right time

Unlike batch-based marketing, AJO Journeys uses the AEP Real-Time Customer Profile to instantly respond to live consumer behaviours, ensuring that messages and experiences are used at the perfect moment. For example, a Unitary journey can recover an abandoned cart or browsing session: when a customer leaves items in their cart or exits a browsing session on the web or mobile, that behavioural event triggers the journey in real-time. The journey then waits a specific window of time before reaching back out with a personalized reminder on the channel best suited to re-engage that customer whether that’s email, push or SMS.

Adobe Journey Optimizer: Campaign Orchestration

Campaign Orchestration in Adobe Journey Optimizer enables sophisticated, brand-initiated campaigns across channels for both marketing and transactional use cases. Marketing campaigns are designed to drive engagement, increase revenue, and build customer loyalty at scale. Transactional messages, which do not require opt-in, are intended for essential, time-sensitive communications such as disruptions, emergencies, or cancellations. Orchestrated campaigns simplify cross-channel marketing with a visual, drag-and-drop interface for designing and automating workflows from segmentation to message delivery, all in one environment.

AJO Campaign Orchestration engages customers by delivering personalized and multi-channel campaigns at scale through key capabilities:

  • Batch campaign canvas: Orchestrated campaigns operate using a batch canvas that calculates segments, with all profiles processed together at the same time. The campaign canvas is designed for iterative and incremental runs of a batch campaign.
  • On-demand audiences: Query datasets in real-time to build audience segments using any combination of data and dimensions.
  • Multi-entity segmentation & sending: Go beyond person-based campaigns by using entities such as product catalogs, store locations, and service data for more precise targeting. Multi-level sending also allows messages to be delivered based on associated entities, such as addresses, bookings, subscriptions, or contracts.
  • Pre-send visibility & precision: Preview segment counts and campaign scope before launch to validate accuracy and ensure confidence in your targeting.
  • Multi-step campaign workflows: Create multi-step campaigns for everything from daily communications to complex initiatives like seasonal and major product launches.

Business outcome: Engaging your customer at the right time

Having dynamic, targeted, and personalized campaigns ready to reach customers at the right time is what makes the difference in B2C marketing. For example, in the telecommunications sector, AJO Campaign Orchestration can be used to manage customer retention and proactive upgrade campaigns. Telecom providers can leverage customer profiles, audience segments, and engagement data to identify subscribers approaching contract renewal or those who may benefit from an upgrade. AJO Campaign Orchestration can then deliver personalized offers and retention incentives through coordinated email, SMS, and push notification campaigns tailored to each customer’s needs and preferences. This personalized approach ensures that customers receive relevant communications at key moments, helping increase customer value, strengthen loyalty, and reduce subscriber churn.

Key Differences Between Journeys and Campaign Orchestration

While the two AJO capabilities share a visual canvas and are both built on the AEP Real-Time Customer Profile, they are designed for different purposes and use cases:

  • Canvas type: Journeys use a 1-to-1 canvas where each profile moves through steps individually, with its state maintained in context. Campaign Orchestration uses a batch canvas that calculates and processes segments, with all profiles handled together at the same time.
  • Pacing: Journeys are event-driven and real-time, reacting to individual behaviour as it happens. Campaign Orchestration is scheduled and planned, executing communications in batch runs.
  • Lifespan: Journeys are built to run continuously and tend to live for a longer period of time. Campaign canvases are designed for iterative, incremental runs of batch campaigns.
  • Targeting: Journeys respond to an individual’s real-time actions. Campaign Orchestration is built for in-depth audience segmentation including multi-entity segmentation and multi-level sending across entities.
  • Message type: Journeys are oriented around hyper-reactive individual triggers. Campaign Orchestration supports both marketing and transactional messaging including time-sensitive, non-opt-in communications.
